Effects of an organophosphorus insecticide, Malathion, in intraperitoneal doses of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg/kg body weight for 18 hours were determined on the mouse bone marrow cells. Cytogenetic studies were performed by analyzing 50 well- spread metaphases for each dose. Four types of chromosomal aberrations namely deletions, fragments, rings and centromeric fusions were recorded. There was a significant increase in the frequency (%) of aberrant metaphase, and chromosomal aberration after exposure to malathion. Results obtained from the studies presented here showed hazardous effects of Malathion on the bone marrow cells of mouse.
