Food consumption pattern and nutritional status of mothers of pre-school children belonging to low-income household of Karachi was studied. Data was collected through household survey. From a stratified, statistically random sample of eight low-income localities (dwelling area not more than 80 square yards) 270 willing households were recruited. The recruited mothers were interviewed about their frequency of food consumption; and their anthropometric measurements were taken. More than 50% of mothers ate at least one food from each of the basic four food groups in a day. However the number of servings consumed each day from milk, meat and fruit and vegetable group was less than what is recommended. Consumption of milk products, fruit, eggs and composite dishes was higher among the well-nourished group.
