Nutrition, soil moisture content and genotypic effects on the photosynthetic activity of flag leaves and water use efficiency in spring barley

Besides of significant genotype (G) and soil treatment (S) effects, G-S interactions for both the photosynthesis (A) and transpiration (E) rate and water use efficiency (WUE) were found in barleys grown under high and low N supply. The barleys did not interact with low N nutrition for the leaf water efficiency (A/E ratio) as well as with low NPK or soil drought for WUE. No close association was noticed between WUE and stress tolerance. Only in the exotic barleys from Ethiopia, Morocco and Syria, the tolerance was associated with the enhanced WUE and relatively high photosynthetic activity of flag leaves. WUE was the most stable character of a high broad-sense herability
