Climatic classification of Portugal based on digitised climatic maps

Climate is often regarded as one of the primary factors influencing the distribution of vegetation. In this work, the delineation of the ecological regions is based on climatic parameters gathered from the Atlas do Ambiente in digital format edited by the Environment Department, using multivariate statistical techniques - principal components analysis and cluster analysis. The whole country was sub-divided into eight homogeneous regions, being water availability and frost occurrence the most significant variables for the classificatory analysis
