Justicia pectoralis and J. gendarussa are medicinal species used popularly for the treatment of pains and inflammations. The phenology and growth of these taxa were monitored along 12 months under experimental cultivation. Two varieties of J. pectoralis were recognized and differentiated mainly for their habit and high production of leaves. J. gendarussa was distinct for its subshrubby habit and high growth rates. Coumarins and O-glycosides of quercetin and kaempferol were only detected in leaves and stems of both varieties of J. pectoralis, while C-glycosides prevailed in leaves and stems of J. gendarussa. Cutting is recommended for propagation of individuals of the three taxa. For the sake of preservation of the species, a use restricted to the leaves is recommended for phytotherapic preparations
