Since sheep in Iraq are raised under different climatic, topographic and management conditions, considerable differentiation due to natural selection has taken place. Nevertheless, their importance is further enhanced because they are the most suitable farm animals to the extensive area of arid and semi arid lands of the country, as well as the major source of livelihood for the rural inhabitants of these area. The objective of this review is to facilitate a compilation of updated information on the characteristcs and performances of Iraq sheep breeds, and on the different aspects of sheep production in the country.
