Birds of forest succession in the abandoned Kumrova vas in the Kocevje region
2000
Perusek, M. (Slovenian Forest Service, Unit Kocevje (Slovenia))
Bird species diversity in the stages of secondary forest succession in Kocevje region is described. In the area of the abandoned village of Kumrova vas bird species composition is more diverse than in the late successional and climax stands. In total, 35 bird species were registered; just four of them are present on all of the seven sample plots. Some endangered species were present, e.g. Picus canus, Dendrocopos minor, Lanius collurio, Streptopelia turtur , Strix uralensis. Successional stages increase bird species diversity; therefore they should be at least partly maintained. For the same reason, pioneer tree species should be preserved in natural (climax) forests.
