Allelopathic effects of Eupatorium odenophorum Spreng. on growth of some crops and weeds

Allelochemical contents were found in all part of the weed Eupatorium odenophorum Spreng; but the highest amounts are present in the leaves and stems. Methanol was the proper solvent for extraction. The bioactive compounds were soluble in aqueous fraction. Allelopathic effects were observed by testing inhibition of seed germination, root growth and shoot growth of 19 species of crops and weeds. Just one gram of plant extract inhibited seed germination of all species. However twelve of the plants tested were strongly and completely inhibited. Ten of these are considered as common weeds and widely distributed in fields. The germination of some plants was delayed, and resulted in adverse effect in root growth. Moreover, growth of nine plant species were retarded when they were planted in soil composted with 5-10 percent dry E. odenophorum. Plant growths on soil spread on the surface with the said weed residue or sprinkled with the extract were not inhibited.
