Analysis of export demand for Thai rice products

Thai rice products are the agricultural-industrial products which increase the value added to rice. Major export Thai rice products are non-glutinous rice flour, glutinous rice flour, noodles or vermicelli made from rice, crispbread, and rice paper. Major export markets for Thai rice products can be divided into 4 markets names; Japan, North America, New Industrial Countries in East Asia, and European Union. The objectives of this study are to review the conditions and potential of Thai-rice-product industry and analyze the export demand for Thai rice products by analyzing major factors which affect the export demand for Thai rice products. The results of this study indicate that Thai rice products have potential to expand the export value, especially crispbread in Japan market, but have a few chance to penetrate in United State of America and New Industrial Countries in East Asia. The rice flour and noodles or vermicelli made from rice also have the export potential, but at lower growth rate, while rice paper has decreased-export value. The problems of Thai-rice-product industry are the raw material quality, shortage of labors, processing technology, sanitary, market information, environment, and export problems. Government plays the major role both in control and support Thai-rice-product industry. Generally, population of major importing countries factor affects the export demand for Thai rice products the most. The income per capita of major importing countries and the export prices of Thai rice products have lower effect on the export demand for Thai rice products. Base on the results of the study, future expansion of markets or exports should be emphasized on quality improvement and product innovation that satisfy foreign customers.
