During the summer months of 1985, the shrimp in the prawn culturing pond showed muscle necrosis. Since the shrimps with the symptom were found in the pond where fresh-water-prawn was reared. Thus, the experiment was performed to determine whether the muscle necrosis that appeared in shrimps would be contagious to the prawn. The prawn would not get the disease after feeding with the diseased shrimp. Micropathological examination of muscle indicated necrosis with infiltration of haemocytes. Degenerated muscle was replaced with fibrous tissues. E. coli and Alkaligenes sp. were found after culturing of the muscle necrotic lesion. However, experimental infection by these two bacterial species did not cause muscle necrosis in shrimp. The shrimps with muscle necrosis were not improved after antibiotic feeding or antibiotic bathing.
