Molasses nonsugar precipitation using aluminium sulphate with addition of calcium oxide

The preparation of sample for polarimetric determination of saccharose content by precipitation of nonsugar matters of molasses using aluminium sulphate with addition of calcium oxide is presented in this paper. It was found that the optimal pH for the precipitation of nonsugars (5.0 pH 6.0) was achieved with 0.47 g CaO/g Al2(SO4)3. Using these agents for precipitation, 70% of colouring matters of molasses is removed and precipitate of good filtrability is obtained. The results of saccharose content determination in molasses using aluminium sulphate in combination with calcium oxide show a certain decreasing tendency in comparison with the official method where lead acetate and lead oxide are used for precipitation.
