Cytogenetic analyses were performed on fish of the species Scardinius erythrophthalmus L. - the rudd, for three consecutive years, in 1986, 1987 and 1988, from certain water localities in Serbia (Yugoslavia): the Bosut (river), the Danube (river), near Visnjica and Grocka, the Pancevacki Rit marsh, the Tamis (river), and the Sebes canal. The analysis showed that this species has a diploid number of 2n=48 chomosomes, namely: 14 metacentrics, 12 submetacentrics, 10 subacrocentrics, and 12 acrocentrics, i.e. the value of the telomera number is NF=84. The analysis of the frequency of interruptions and gaps in these three years indicated that some of the localities (and results obtained for certain other fish species are also in favour of this) - appear as potentially risky as to the presence of pollution with genotoxic agents. These were primarily the localities of the Tamis and the Danube at Visnjica and Grocka, and possibly at Pancevacki Rit, where most of the obtained values (or all) enter into or even excede the area of the critical zone, which indicates an occasional or constant presence of genotoxic agents in the aquatic environment.
