Upgrading fishery in [water] reservoirs and channels of Hydrosystem Danube - Tisza- Danube [Serbia, Yugoslavia]

The channels in Backa (Serbia, Yugoslavia) are of anthropogenic origin, with current velocity less then 0.2 m/sec, minimum depth of 2.2 m and average width of 40-60 m, with insignificant water level alterations and extreme variations of dissolved oxygen content, which ranges from deficit to hypersaturation, as a mam characteristic. Species richness and abundance of phytoplankton varies seasonally and spatially along the channel network. During the period 1990-1996, 75 zooplankton species were present in the channel system, while in Zobnatica water reservoir 100 were identified. Abundance of Oligochaetes expressed as number of specimens per square meter indicates high sediment productivity of the studied ecosystems and the plentiful of natural food for bentivore fish. The basic channel network of the DTD (Danube - Tisza - Danube) hydrosystem as well as the water micro reservoirs in Backa (Serbia, Yugoslavia) present the invaluable resource for agriculture, particularly for fish production. Taking certain sections of the network and particular reservoirs into consideration, fish production varies from 45.6 to 83 kg/ha.
