In this paper the results of the investigations on the characteristics of walnuts, hazelnut and wild hazelnut trees in the region of Timocka Krajina (Serbia, Yugoslavia) were presented. The polmological characteristics of fruits, the chemical content of the kernel, fruit-fullness and occurrence of plant diseases and pests have been studied. Special characteristics of these fruits is significant nourishing value of the kernel. They grow and give fruits spontaneously, in nature or in extensive conditions of production without any special care, cultivation, nourishment and chemical protection. Besides, the characteristics of fruits, fruitfulness and state of plant diseases and pests point to the fact that these native fruit trees are very significant source of healthily safe food and a factor in preserving healthy environment.
