Determination of the loading critical levels for acidic atmospheric depositions in forest ecosystems was one the main goals of the Bulgarian-Swiss project which started in 1997 with the establishment of three ecological stationary sample plots. In the present report, results are presented on the analysis of soil stability to acidic atmospheric depositions. The data on the sorption properties, mechanical texture and mineral composition showed that soils in the Yundola and Vitinya stations could be characterized by low buffer capacity and chemical activity to acid atmospheric depositions. By contrast, the soil characteristics in the Staro Oryachovo station point to increased buffer capacity and chemical activity to acid atmospheric depositions.
