This paper presents the results from two thinning experimental series which were established in 24 and 25 years old spruce stands (Picea abies) near the electric power plant Trutnov-Porici (NE Bohemia) in 1964-1965. This power plant was the main regional source of immissions in the 80s which worked mainly on coal of local origin which lower content of SO2, but with high content of ash. On experimental series, three thinning regimes based on selection from below were tested: B (slight thinning), C (heavy thinning) and D (very heavy thinning). Results of the experiments in period 1964-1999 (age 24-60 years) confirmed the positive effect of very heavy thinning in air polluted spruce stands comparing to other investigated regimes. Experimental stands with thinning regime D are of the best growth and trees from these stands have better static stability and better or comparable health condition.
