The utilization of set-aside arable land is actual problem of present agriculture in the Czech Republic and European Union. Abandoned arable land is potential risk for environment and landscape. The problems concern weed control, nitrate leaching and soil conditions changes. One form of set-aside usesage are grasses. The swards effectively prevent losses of nitrates to the hydrosphere and protect fields against erosion and weed spread. These swards have to be manged at least once a year. The biomass can be used as a mulch or for a bioenergy.
