An 8-year-old Newfoundlander was presented after return from a visit to Hungary with a history of loss of appetite, listlessness, fatigue, excessive thirst, and reddish brown urine. Two ticks found on clinical examination were identified as Dermacentor sp. Babesia merozoites were identified in blood smears stained with Giemsa. In spite of acute therapy, the patient died three days after admission to the hospital.
