Torrential rains occurring in Colombia were evaluated over a period of 18 years. The R factor of erosion effectiveness was calculated for 522 rains with more than 12.5 mm of water and intensity superior to 24 mm/h for the particular conditions of the station Agronomia in Manizales. Further, the average repetition time and probability of erosion-causing rains occurrence were calculated. The minimum and maximum thirty-minute intensity values of rains are also presented. The average R values per rain in Agronomia over the year vary from 136 MJxmm/haxh (August) to 273 MJxmm/haxh (May). The greatest quantity of dangerous rains occurs from October to December and in April. The results of this work enable to calculate the protective effect of the vegetation and to evaluate the effectiveness and durability of the proposed erosion control measures.
