The effect of urea additive on fermentation and nutritive value of maize silage was studied. Maize hybrid Topolcianska 360 was harvested when the dry matter concentration was 329 g/kg, then 2.5 or 5.0 kg/t of finely granulated urea was added. The addition of urea led to the increase of lactic and acetic acid concentrations, ammonium production, degree of proteolysis, and nitrogen compounds concentrations. The dry matter losses increased by 7.41 % when 5 kg/t of urea was added. Because of the increased production of ammonium, we do not recommend to add more than 5 kg/t of urea to maize silage.
