Characteristics and potentials of local informal institutions in rural Ethiopia: some experences from north and west Shewa

The potential of the local indigenous institutions on one hand and the little information existing regarding them on the otherhand have been discussed. This paper discusses the type, distribution, characteristics, potentials and problems of local informal institutions existing in the North and West Shewa zones of Oromia. Some institutions that are known by different names, but render similar functions were identified in these areas through a study that employed qualitative approaches of data collection techniques. Though there is overlapping of functions, in general, these institutions address the socioeconomic, socio-administrative and socio-cultural and religious needs of the members of the community. Formed in response to the various needs of the society, most of them are stable and have reasonably longer time of existence. They have broader functions and are characterized by dynamicity, legitimate leadership, and preferred substitutes of the formal alternatives.
