Privet thrips (Dendrothrips ornatus Jablonowski) occurs in low population density on privet (Ligustrum vulgare), on lime (Tilia spp.) in mixed forest, as well as on lilac (Syringa spp.). It causes sever damage on privet hedges growing in the streets and parks. Its population density is higher in the hedges, grown under dry, sunny exposition, than in the hedges in the shaded sites or in solitary shrubs. In these cases environmental stress effect is manifested under Hungarian climatic conditions. The fertilised females hibernate in the litter under the shrubs. Two or three generations develop during the vegetation period. Its population density could be reduced by regular irrigation of the shrubs, or by the use of summer oil insecticides when the larvae occur in high density.
