A field experiment was conducted at farmer's field in Galang, North Sumatra in dry season 1998, to investigate the effect of increasing seed rates on weed and yield of wet direct-seeded rice. The experiment used a split plot design, with three replications. Land preparation was the main plot, consisting: full tillage and tillage and seed rates were the sub plots, consisting: 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 kg/ha and transplanted rice (25 kg/ha). The results showed that increasing seed rates increased crop density at 25 days after sowing. On the other hand, there was no significant effect of increasing seeding rates on weed weight at 49 days after sowing. Seed rates of 60 kg/ha gave the maximum tiller number and the highest productive tillers. However, the highest yield (7,85 ton/ha) was obtained from plot with 80 kg/ha seed rate with no tillage land preparation
