Direct seeded lowland rice technology has some benefits compared to transplanting rice. The studty was conducted on SUTPA area at Surantih, Pesisir Selatan in 1997/98. The objective was to evaluate yield of some lowland varieties in direct seeded and transplanting systems. Stratified sampling was used in this study. Four varieties (Cisokan, Digul, Batang Anai, IR-42) was planted by direct seeded and transplanting systems with same treatments. Data collected were plant age, population/square m, grains number per panicle, percentage of empty grain, and yield. Result showed that direct seeded system gave higher yield compared to transplanting system. IR-42 had lower yield compared to Batang Anai, Cisokan and Digul
