[Direct seeding rice planting system before and after fish culture]

The lower labor cost is the major advantage of rice direct seeding planting system. The method eliminates seedbed preparation, care of seedling in seedbed, pulling and transplanting. The experiment was carried out in irrigated lowland area Sungai Beringin Payakumbuh, West Sumatra in the planting season 1996/1997. The treatments were planting system of rice before fish culture (transplanting and drill direct seeding) and after fish culture (transplanting, drill direct seeding and broadcasting). Objectives of the experiment were to observe the effect of planting systems of rice before and after fish culture and to get the best planting method of rice and more benefit. Results of the experiment showed that rice and fish cropping pattern effective to reduce weed growth in rice. Weed dry weight after fish culture was lower than that before fish culture. Transplanting and drill direct seeding rice planting system after fish culture gave better plant growth and higher yield more benefit than before fish culture. Direct seeding in broadcasting system did not gave better performance of rice and gave the lowest yield among treatments
