The objectives of this research was to investigate the effects of two kinds of tillage systems (puddled and non-puddled), planting system (direct seeding and transplanting) and N fertilization (46, 92, and 138 kg ha-1 N) were applied three times on the characteristics of plant growth and yield of lowland rice (Oryza Sativa L.). This research was conducted on Inceptisol in Kedaloman village, Talangpadang, Tanggamus from October 1996 to February 1997 in the second season of long term research program. The result of the experiment showed there was no interaction between N fertilization and planting system in two tillage systems all variable observed. Nitrogen fertilization 138 kg ha-1 N was higher than 46 kg ha-1 N on plant height, tillering number, and yield of rice. Tillage system was significantly on tillering number and yield of rice; non-puddled was higher than non-puddled. Component of yield were occured on yield of rice at transplanting system was spikelet number per panicle and at direct seeding was panicle number per plant
