A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of SP36 fertilization on upland rice cultivar 'Cirata' as mix cropping under one year old oil palm. The experiment was conducted at Bekri area in Central Lampung during the 1996/97 wet season. Treatments were laid out in a split plot design and replicated four times. The main plot was the methods of land preparation (zero tillage and full tilage) while the sub plot was the levels of SP36 (0; 36; 72; 108; and 144 kg P2O5/ha), which was tested as sources of phosphorus. The results showed that there was interaction between methods of land preparation and levels of SP36 rates in increasing rice yields, but not in yield components. The maximum yield of upland rice at zero tillage and full tillage were obtained under fertilization of 97.58 and 161.83 kg P2O5/ha, respectively. The increase of upland rice cultivar 'Cirata' was related to the number of panicles/m2 and the number grains/panicle
