Evaluation of neem seed oil product for control of tea pests in Kenya
1998
Sudoi, V.
Studies were conducted to determine the efficacy of 0.03% neem seed oil product (NSO) either as contact poisons, on mites, aphids and weevils of tea or antifeedant on weevils of tea. It was demonstrated that the neem seed oil is effective as contact poison for control of citrus aphid (Toxoptera aurantii). The product is however less effective on red spider mite (Olygonychus coffeae) and Kangaita weevils (Entypotrachelus meyeri). Direct application of the neem product at 2.5% concentration on the pests significantly reduced their survival after 24 hours. The antifeedant effect of neem product on Kangaita weevils varied at different concentrations. At 2.5% concentration, the product was effective as contact poison on red spider mite O. coffeae, at 10% concentration, on citrus aphid T. aurantii and 20%, it was effective as antifeedant on the weevils E. meyeri. The NSO product has a potential of being used against the spider mites, citrus aphid attack and weevils in tea nurseries and in the field.
