Spring rape and bird-rape is suitable for widening plant oil and protein resources in Latvia. A research on spring rape varieties, their seed production and seed quality has been performed in the framework of the programme. The studies of seeds of growing spring rape varieties with a possibly short period of vegetation and with disease and lodging resistance have been selected. The total content of fat was 43 to 46 % for spring rape (1140-1590 kg ha*[-1) oil yield) and 41 to 43 % (620-900 kg ha*[-1) oil yield) for birdrape. The varieties with the shortest period of vegetation are 'Lisora' and 'Smak' (94 to 96 days). The varieties with high lodging resistance are 'Licosmos', 'Star', 'Rebel', 'Sponsor' (spring rape varieties) and 'Mammut', 'Valo', 'Kulta' (bird-rape varieties).
