The aim of this article is to clarify the influence of important abiotic factors such as light, temperature and water in a soil moisture control treatment on the vegetative growth of apple trees and the increase of trunk diameter. The experiment was carried out at the Dobele HPBES with two apple varieties 'Melba' and 'Korichnoe Novoe' grafted on dwarf rootstock B 9 in 1997. The soil moisture control treatment included drip irrigation (fertigation) and sawdust mulch. The meteorological data were collected during 5-years period at the meteorological station. The trunk diameter was measured at the end of the growth period every year. The trial showed that fertigation and mulch had a positive influence on the growth of apple trunk.
