The minor components in palm oil which account for less than 1 percent of its composition contribute to the quality and nutritional benefits of the oil. The carotenoids and vitamin E as tocopherols and tocotrienols play an important role as antioxidants. Carotenoids also serve as precursors of vitamin A. Red palm oil has much potential in the alleviation of vitamin A deficiency because of its high bioavailability. The tocotrienols also have considerable therapeutic benefits. The significance of the other minor constituents is being recognised. With the growing public appetite for dietary supplements, the micronutrients in palm oil are a natural choice.
