The present day negative correlation between tremendous increase in population and stagnation in yield level is creating an alarming situation for agricultural production. Henceforth, it desires attention on priority basis for increasing yield potential on per unit land basis through identification and characterization of genetically productive and stress tolerant varieties. The possible alternative approach towards improvement of yield by manipulating and improving the physiological efficiency for various plant characters have been discussed. The role of canopy architecture with incorporation of better plant type for efficient translocation and partitioning of assimilate from source to sink consequently resulting to a significant yield is the central theme of this paper. The various channels for increasing the yield potential through interaction of different physiological parameters have been emphasized. Simultaneously efforts have also been made to evaluate different ideotype for various ecosystems based on the specific characteristic description relevant to their physiological basis. The approaches would help and open an exciting possibilities to identify and analyze the required modifications to raise the yield potential in rice and break through the yield barrier
