A survey was conducted among the rice farmers in Region 8 [Eastern Visayas, Philippines] to determine their knowledge, attitudes and practices on the use of pesticides and the incidence of pesticide poisoning among them. Results indicated that 73.03% of the rice farmers in the region use pesticides, that they are slightly knowledgeable on the proper and safe use, and that they use pesticides that belong to the family of organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids, and molluscicides which are potential causes of varied health problems. The five most common manifestations of poisoning observed are chest and back pains, elevated blood pressure and paleness, blurring of vision, body weakening and numbness, and skin lesions and thickening. It was estimated that one out of every six farmers in the region have manifestations perceived as related to pesticide poisoning which can be accounted for the farmers' being only slightly knowledgeable on the proper and safe use of pesticides
