With the report of a new plant species, it becomes necessary to determine its chromosome number so that the species can be properly classified and diagnosed. Sporocytes of new species of banana, Musa exotica R. Valmayor sp. nov., were collected. The sporocytes were fixed in a solution consisting of one part acidic acid to three parts 95% ethyl alcohol plus a drop of ferrous chloride for 24 hours at room temperature. They were transferred to 70% alcohol and stored in a refrigerator before they were examined for characteristics of the chromosomes. The modified acetocarmine smear technique was used in preparing the sporocytes. Based on cytological examination, the chromosomes clumped tightly during early prophase I. Cells were counted at metaphase 1 and at anaphase 1. At all counts, the chromosome number of Musa exotica R. Valmayor is 2n=20
