An experiment was conducted for testing nine advanced wheat breeding lines and the commercial Suleman-96 as a standard check were planted in RCBD with three replications during 1999-2000 at Agricultural Research Station, Jarma, Kohat, NWFP. Data were recorded on days to 50% heading, plant height (cm), number of productive tillers/plant, number of spikes/m2, spike length (cm), number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike, 1000-grain weight (g), biological yield (kg/ha-1), grain yield (kg/ha-1) and harvest index. The genotypes were highly significantly different (P less than 0.01) for days to 50% heading, grains/spike, 1000-grain weight, grain yield, while significant (P 0.05) differences were depicted for number of productive tillers/plant, biological yield and harvest index. Non significant (P greater than 0.05) differences were recorded for the rest of parameters examined. Entries No. 1,2,8 and 10 (standard check) took minimum days to 50% heading. Entry No. 9 possessed higher number- of productive tillers as compared to the standard check. Entries 1,2,7,8 and 9 possessed higher grains/spike as compared to the check. Highest 1000-grain weight was recorded in entries No. 1,2,5,6 and 10 (standard check). Higher biological yield was recorded in entries No. 1 and 3 compared to the standard check. Entries No. 1 and 8 gave the highest grain yield and higher than the standard check. Highest harvest index was computed in entries No. 1,2,5,7,8 and 10 (standard check). Further studies are suggested for the ultimate recommendation of entries 1 and 8 for general cultivation in the Rainfed areas of NWFP.
