Many industrial plants in the country are producing by-products/waste material which have no use at present. American Engineering Services, Lalpir Thermal Power Station, Muzaffar Garh produces a large quantity of by-product during electricity production process. The by-product was found to contain 21% gypsum. A research work was conducted during the year 2000-2001 in the experimental area of the Department of Soil Science, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of by- product on growth and nutrient use efficiency of wheat crop under field conditions. This by-product was used as a soil conditioner. Comparative effect of the conditioner and NPK fertilizers, separately and in combinations, on growth and nutrient use efficiency of wheat was studied. Describing the results, it can be stated that the conditioner did not play an important role in case of wheat yield, but it significantly increased the NPK concentrations in wheat grains and straw. Thus, it can be concluded that although, the soil conditioner did not increase the wheat yield quantitatively, yet it improved the quality of wheat grains and straw.
