Design of rotary tiller for walking tractors

This research study on design of rotary tiller for walking tractors has three main objectives as follows; 1) design of power transmission unit; 2) design of rational rotary blades and 3) study on manufacturing technology of rotary blades. Moreover, the cost analysis of manufacturing rotary blades is also discussed. There are two methods for transmitting power from the engine to drive the main rotary tilling shaft. They are directed and indirected transmitting power methods. The first one is required to redesign and fabricate a new transmission system of walking tractor. This method is required to design the lowest forward gear about 0.3-0.5 m/sec. The power take-off shaft is one of a transmitting shaft in the main power transmission unit. The second one is to design and develop an additional gear box to couple with the main power transmission. This method can be applied to various types of existing walking tractors. Therefore, this method is considered to be more suitable because farmers can buy only a gear box to install on their walking tractors. The price of a gear box is much cheaper than a new transmission unit. Rotary blades are important parts of the rotary tiller because the quality of soil cultivation and performance of machine depend mainly on blades. Therefore, rational blades should have the following characteristics of; less soil resistance, high durability and resistance to wearing, good soil inversion, less twining trouble of grass and straw and less vibration to the walking tractor. In order to obtain such blades, it is necessary to conduct R&D. In this basic research, some design theories and manufacturing know-hows of blades are achieved. It is recommended to further conduct this research and development with the collaboration of private sectors in order to manufacture blades at production scale.
