High carbohydrate content of plums with high glycemic index (85) place it in food group which must be controlled in carbohydrate and/or energy restricted diets. Less ripened plums contain more insoluble propectin and less glycids and may be used in energy restricted diets. Prunes contain more soluble pectin, but high glycids and manganese shorten the bowel transit time, and increase the stool bulk resulting in regulation of opstipation with greater elimination of colon pathogens and nitrosamines. Regulation of bowel emptying is a milestone in prevention of colon carcinogenesis and obesity. Plums and products with plums (prunes, juices, jam) represent easily nutrition of healthy individuals especially young persons with high enegy needs (adolescents, low weight individuals and sportiest). In products where cereals or nuts, insoluble dietary fibres and prunes are combined high glycemic index of prunes is moderated and good functional food may be made. Popularization of traditional food in every-day diet may correct the quality of the national nutrition and in the same time lower the number of nutrition related risk factors for chronic diseases.
