Forest trees absorb mineral substances from the lowest soil layers, even from the rocks, so the trees are obliged to embrace all the newer masses of the parent rocks by their roots. As magnesium is one of major elements in plant nutrition, this paper presents the total contents of MgO in some rocks of Kopaonik, Zeljen, Boranja, Cer and Gornjane (Serbia, Yugoslavia) and assesses the values of the content of this oxide in these parent rocks of forest soils. The study results are a contribution to the research of the potential of the above rocks s sources of magnesium in the nourishment of forest trees. They also have an application value, because they can be implemented as a guideline in silviculture and also in the selection of plant species in the afforestation of these regions.
