Susceptibility of granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius (L.) Coleoptera: Curculionidae, populations to contact insecticides and interaction with effects of temperature extremes and starvation
2001
Kljajic, P.
Toxicity of contact insecticides (dichlorvos, malathion, chlorpyrifos-methyl, pirimiphos-methyl, deltamethrin and cypermethrin) and the synergist piperonyl butoxide, and susceptibility/resistance to them of laboratory granary weevils adults and populations sampled from various storage facilities were determined. Toxicity parameters (LD parameters and ld-p lines) and levels of susceptibility/resistance were compared following insecticide application to filter paper or to wheat grains, and efficacy of relevant commercial products were investigated. Effects of insecticides on granary weevil progeny were also determined. Direct effects of temperature extremes (-5, 5 and 50 deg C) and starvation, and their interaction with insecticide toxicity to laboratory and resistant granary weevils were investigated. Direct exposure to temperature extremes and starvation was equally lethal to granary weevils in all investigated populations, while their previous exposure to such conditions resulted in different toxicity effects of some investigated insecticides.
