There has been a great advance in the study of ectomycorrhizal populations and communities in the last ten years. This review introduces various tools : isozymes, incompatibility systems, mitochondrial genetics, molecular tools,... are presented; the use of sporophores vs. mycorrhizae for such studies is discussed. Main results about succession, response to disturbances, description and dynamics of populations, reproduction and growth of genets are reviewed, mainly for temperate and mediterranean regions. The paper also deals with attempts to manage ectomycorrhizal communities in order to improve tree growth and edible fruit-body production.
