During these last decades, crop modelling has been developed from the knowledge in eco-physiology and agronomy relating crop-climate-soil interactions including, when available, agricultural practices. These models are adequate tools when the effects of cropping conditions on crop growth and yield are to be simulated and analysed, and consequently when yield prediction is concerned. In this research programmes dedicated to sugar beet yield prediction, INRA referred to the SUCR02 model (Wageningen University/AB-DLO), which was tested, calibrated and adapted particularly for the water stress conditions. In partnership with ITB, INRA wished to facilitate the access of such a model to people outside the research community. Therefore, Beta vulagris has been developed under Windows95. It allows non-model-specialists to perform crop simulations, to visualise graphically the results (leaf area growth, mass growth of the different organs, sugar accumulation in the root). The friendly user interface allows to capture easily the input data (climate, soil, technical options for drilling, harvesting, irrigation techniques). Beta vulgaris has been tested with various field experiment results from ITB (Institut technique de betterave): it described properly the differences observed between irrigated - non irrigated experiments, and gave an interesting validation of the criteria used by ITB for irrigation alert. More over, at the scale of one department (7400 ha) it gave a realistic description of the relative evolution of yields, over a 10 years period.
