Quality management in variety and seed testing

Ladewig, E. (Institut fuer Zuckerruebenforschung, Goettingen (Germany))
Quality management is achieved through institutionalised testing and continuous optimizing of product quality. This is done by integrating external and internal demands on quality. How quality management in variety testing in Germany is achieved is content of this contribution. The Integrated Variety Testing System involves the Federal Office of Plant Varieties (BSA = Bundessortenamt) which conducts the Official Variety Trials and the Coordination Board (KA = Koordinierungsausschuss) at the Institute of Sugar Beet Research (IfZ = Institut fur Zuckerrubenforschung) which tests registered varieties. Testing is carried out in coordination with both of these institutions. In accordance with legal requirements, seedlots are tested by government officials. Further control is done by IfZ. The quality management is marked by clear decision making structure as well as through the collaboration of consumers (growers associations), customers (sugar industry), government officials (BSA), testing organisations (BSA, KA, IfZ, regional work groups, breeders) and sellers (breeding companies) in the KA study groups Varieties and Trial Technique.
