Worldwide 38 million tons sugar out of sugar beet are produced, 29 million tons of it in Europe. The sugar industry has productive structures. This is of special importance because of the international competition and the special challenges by the actual WTO proceedings. For the sugar beet growing plant it is important to seize exactly the own financial situation. As far as the economy of industry is concerned there is still a potential for reducing costs in particular in relation to capacity related costs. Besides the necessities on the expenses it is urgent for the international competition to reach further progress in the fields of breeding, plant nutrition, plant protection and cultivation technology.
