The aim of the investigation was to analyse and quantify the consequences of storage for the development of the moisture content of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) in the stand, while leaving the green crown on the trunk. The examination of the consequences of this pre-drying process focused on different heights of the stem. To offer a more detailed investigation method to separate radial areas according to their different moisture loads, an exponential function was applied which fits well the empirical radial variation of the moisture values. We were able to quantify the possible potential of the full tree storage concerning the drawdown of the moisture content in different radial areas of the roundwood. The investigation showed that the moisture content in the different heights of the trees was not significantly influenced by the storage of the complete trees in the stand. At the beginning a statistically significant displacement of the wood moisture from the basis to the crown of the trees could be established. Due to transpiration processes the moisture content of the top logs decreased with an increasing duration of the full tree storage in the stand.
