Probably because of the warmer climate observed during the last decade, the "Army worm" Pseudaletia unipuncta Haw. has been able to colonize the Magadino plain in the Tessin. Overwintering caterpillars were found in the vineyards of Gudo. The first moths, from chrysalises of the previous year, were caught in light traps from the end of February to the middle of March. Due to favorable seasonal weather conditions, the population increased considerably in 1997, provoking in autumn important damage in grasslands and in the cultures of seed corn during the following year. The evolution of the pest is monitored by light traps.
