Contamination of ration components and roughage fed to dairy cows and finishing bulls in two different agricultural ecosystems (intensive and alternative agricultural production) was monitored. Samples of feed (grass, alfalfa, clover, haylage, wheat, roughage, preserved feeds and trough samples of feed), irrigation water, cow milk, beef liver and muscle were analysed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) by high resolution gas chromatography. Imissions were also evaluated by determining the concentrations of SO2, NOx, CO, O3, and dust. The concentrations of PCB congeners did not exceed the safety limit in any of the sampling areas. The mean PCB concentrations varied between 1-2 microg/kg in feed and between 2-9 microg/kg in animal tissues. Calculation of the transfer coefficient Q proved to be a suitable tool for the assessment of residue transfer (0.2-1.0 in dairy cows, 0.3-1.0 in bulls). Feed was identified as an important contamination source for animal tissues and milk.
