Following World War II, the leading organized of scientific research in Estonia was the Academy of Sciences founded in 1946, along with its institutes. Under one of these, the Institute of Botany established in 1947 a sector of forestry was opened. The latter's primary field of research was the enlargement of the area under forests in Estonia and the augmentation of felling produce. Within these confines, the research initially focused on the study and better management of extreme sites and the forestation of inferior farming land. The research resulted in the working out of the theoretical foundations of forest drainage, among others. Later, the study and mapping of forest soils, the stocktaking of Estonian dendroflora, forest typology, etc. were included among the primary fields of research. The silvicultural work at the Sector of Forestry carried a biological bias, where the theory of forestry was linked with the working out of practical suggestions for a better management of forests. Studies that were more specific were performed in other sectors of the Institute. The sector of forestry launched the printing of a scientific collection 'Forestry Studies'. In the early 1960's, there was a trend in the Soviet Union to render scientific institutions more practical in their approach. As a result, the sector of forestry was reorganized into a laboratory subordinated to the Central Forestry Office. The laboratory was the predecessor of the Estonian Forest Institute and the Forest research Institute of the Estonian Agricultural University
