Tef generally suffers less from diseases compared to most other cereals; however, this should not be misconstrued to underestimate the importance of tef diseases. More that 24 fungal pathogens and two nematodes have been reported to cause diseases on tef. The status of the great majority of these diseases was determined as "minor". Only tef rust (Uromyces eragrostidis tracy), head smudge (Helminthosporium miyakei Nisikado) and damping-off caused by Drechslera spp. and Epicoccum nigrum link are the most important ones. Basic information, including the most required figures from loss assessment studies, on these diseases is meager. No viral or bacterial diseases are reported on tef so far.
