The genetics of quantitative traits in tef

Generation means analyses in different crosses of tef revealed that additive [a] and epistatic gene effects controlled the inheritance of grain yield. The triple test cross studies also indicated the presence of epistatic interactions for grain yield. Epistasis was also detected for yield per panicle, panicle weight, tiller number, harvest index, plant height panicle length, days to heading and days to maturity. The consistent presence of epistasis in different studies indicates that non-allelic gene interactions play a great role in the inheritance of tef traits. Norrow sense heritability (h squared) values were low for grain yield and kernel weight. High h squared values were obtained for days to heading, days to maturity and panicle length. Yield per panicle, panicle weight, and plant weight showed moderate h squared values with less variation across studies. The h square values for tiller number and plant height fluctuated from low to high across studies. Because grain yield and other yield related traits show epistatic gene action, imposing selection at early generations may not be advisable.
